My Educational Philosophy

 Yusuf ibn ‘Ubayd (Rahimaullah) said,

  • With good manners – you will understand knowledge
  • With knowledge – your actions will be corrected
  • With correct actions – wisdom will be obtained
  • With wisdom – Zuhd (abstention) will be developed
  • With zuhd – comes abandoning the (constant concerns of) this dunya (world)
  • With abandoning this dunya – comes the desire for the Hereafter
  • With desire for the Hereafter – the pleasure of Allah is obtained.

 General Beliefs about Education

The general purpose of education is to guide man towards human excellence and to provide him with specific guidelines that will help him reach his full potential. Education is the process by which mankind can deliberately transmit accumulative beneficial knowledge, skills and values from one generation to the next.

Scope and Nature of the Educative Process

True education takes into consideration the fitrah (natural inclination) of man and serves to articulate beliefs, principles, methods and practices that will best achieve benefits in this world. Harm and benefits are the two over arching concerns that motivate man to act. The process of educating must first connect with the human psyche and lead him towards that which satisfies the soul and secures its fears. Educators must work to develop good character and manners that generate love and admiration in the hearts of the student. Good manners and good character are enfolds by which knowledge is inserted and willfully absorbed into the mind and hearts of the student.        

Characteristics and Needs of the Students Served

Normally, students do not achieve their full potential growth automatically; by nature they are forgetful; open to deceptive influences; easily captivated by their own imagination and narrow desires. These forces are very insidious and can lead one away from their intuitive nature. Only through education is one able to systematically develop understanding, discipline and faith that enhance the human soul to pursue a path of intelligence.      

Student outcomes to be attained and Behavioral Objectives

Islam recognizes that a major portion of ones conduct is stimulated by learned behavior. Learned behavior primarily comes as a consequence of infusing concepts and images of human success into aspirations and inclinations. Islam provides a set of beliefs, concepts and principles capable of invigorating the heart with faith along with practical acts of worship that cultivate justice, righteousness and moral consciousness. As educators we must articulate these teachings and make them relevant in this day and time. Young students must be able to envision how the teachings of Islam will serve as a key vehicle for their success.
