This was sponsored by SHAPE America Society of Health and Physical Educators whose motto is health; moves; minds. We will begin with Lessons 1-4 for the remainder of first quarter and continue into second quarter with Lessons 5-10. Teams will be formed and the competition will begin to test our learning and knowledge of the game of FLAG FOOTBALL.

    Welcome again to upper elementary P.E. updates for the first school week!

    Each student has be given P.E. class behaviors and procedures, which will be uploaded on the webpage soon. Students will be required to learn our first acronym P. E. A. C. E. by the end of first quarter. Below you will find what each letter stands for and work together with your student to achieve this goal.

    P = Protect P.E. Equipment

    E = Enter & Exit the gym quietly

    A = Attention: Follow directions the first time.

    C = Cooperation: Work well with others.

    E = Esteem: Respect others

    This year we will conduct Fitness Assessments for each student the first 2-3 weeks of school, end of 2nd quarter and end of 4th quarter. This week we will start with Muscular Endurance and Speed. What’s that you might say, well each student will participate in a series of exercises as listed below and will keep a record to show future progress throughout the year.

    Muscular Endurance: Push Up (Regular or Female Style) and Sit Ups (Chest to knee) Record: #of each in 30/60/90 second increments

    Speed: Full Court Lines (Free throw-back, half court-back, free throw-back, baseline-back) and Half Court (half court line-back, baseline-back) Record: Overall Group Time (OGT) and Individual Time (IT)

    CHECK THIS OUT!

    -Read the quote of the week located at the bottom left corner of the webpage. I will advise students to check it at least once a week and may ask them in class to repeat it.

    -Watch the video of the week located at the bottom right corner of the webpage. This video will include fitness tips, exercise demos, and more. Students will be directed to these videos in the future for “flip the gym” homework for grading

    Our young muslimahs are working to complete their Muscular Endurance Assessment and were introduced to the Speed Assessment: Half Court Lines. In the Speed Assessment, each group has to run and touch certain lines on the court within their overall group time (OGT). To complete their 1st quarter fitness assessments, they will also participate in the Cooper Run which each girl will record their number of laps around the gym in 12 minutes. This is in preparation for the final part of their fitness assessment in the 2nd quarter when they run a timed 1/2 mile, which is 4 laps around the gym.

    We added a new P.E. routine this year consisting of an aerobic style 10 minute warm-ups ending with 2 laps around the gym. This will take place at the beginning of each class lead by student leaders each week. The leaders of the week will be assessed on how well they conducted the routine for example, doing the exercises in the correct order. Once the each student has lead we will add on to the routine in the 2nd quarter and repeat the same process for participation grades. Their will be a link to check out this routine so the students can refresh themselves or even practice at home.

    We are looking forward to starting our first sport unit, Soccer, Monday Sept. 8th through end of first quarter. Each week there will be a different skill introduced, they will then be grouped in teams and practice during classes and finally play in our own unique “Jr. Crescent World Cup” to finish up the unit. Any moms who want to VOLUNTEER during this unit or the “Jr. Crescent World Cup” games, please contact me at april.ackle@alimanschool.org.

    The girls have completed their Muscular Endurance Assessment and are working on their Speed Assessment: Half Court Lines and Full Court Lines. In the Speed Assessment, each group has to run and touch certain lines on the court within their overall group time (OGT). They will run one round per class until complete by the end of the 1st qurater. So far we have a very fast uppper elementary group.

    We have started our “leaders of the week” for daily warm-ups to lead the new P.E. routine, consisting of an aerobic style 10 minute warm-ups ending with 2 laps around the gym. The leaders of the week will be assessed on how well they conducted the routine for example, doing the exercises in the correct order. Once each student has lead we will add on to the routine in the 2nd quarter and repeat the same process for participation grades. You can check out this routine listed on the right side of this page and the students can refresh themselves or even practice at home.

    We finally started our first sport unit, Soccer, Monday Sept. 15th through end of first quarter. IT’S TIME FOR VOLLEYBALL!
    FINALLY OUR VOLLEYBALL BASIC UNIT IS HERE. WE HAVE THE NET AND THE POLES, AND WE ARE READY TO PLAY!

    VOLLEYBALL FACTS:

    WHEN WAS VOLLEYBALL INVENTED?

    Volleyball was invented in the United States in 1895 by William G. Morgan at the Holyoke, Mass. Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA).

    WHAT WAS ITS ORIGINAL NAME BEFORE CALLING IT VOLLEYBALL?

    Morgan combined facets of basketball, tennis and handball into “Mintonette,” as it was first called.

    WHERE & WHEN DID THE GAME BEGIN TO DEVELOP OFFENSIVELY AND DEFENSIVELY?

    Offensive techniques were first developed in the Phillipines around 1916, which led to further developement of the rules as a whole. Increased offensive skills called for increased defensive skills, so strategy also flourished.

    STAY TUNED FOR MORE UPDATES AND FUN FACTS ABOUT VOLLEYBALL!

    Do You Know Your Level of Fitness?

    During 1st Qtr we begin with a few fitness tests to get active and give each girl the tools to do some of the exercises at home. This year we will be using the FITNESSGRAM resource to guide use in the proper technique and guide scale for students based on age. We will revisit the same exercises at the end of 3rd Qtr to compare and assess our level of fitness.
